WASHINGTON, D.C., February 4 -- As bioterrorism makes its way into Americas homes through non-stop media coverage of New York City and world events, preventive medicine professionals will present their perspective on bioterrorism preparedness at Preventive Medicine 2002, the annual meeting of the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM).
Bioterrorism response strategies, emergency response/preparedness and lessons from September 11th, combating the obesity and diabetes epidemics, vaccine controversies, new cholesterol guidelines, and cancer screening controversies are just a handful of the topics that will be presented at this years meeting, which will be held at the Adams Mark San Antonio Riverwalk hotel in San Antonio, Texas, February 20-24, 2002.
Dean Ornish, MD, founder and president, Preventive Medicine Research Institute, will present the much-anticipated keynote speech, Diet, Lifestyle & the Power to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease." Tommy Thompson, MD, Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has been invited to give the meetings inaugural address.
Also on hand to present workshops on Colon Cancer Screening: Best Approaches" and School Physical Activity and Reproductive Health Programs and their Impact on Adolescent Health," among others, will be physicians from the nations top research hospitals and educational centers, including the University of Pittsburgh, University of North Carolina and Johns Hopkins Center for Adolescent Health.
The annual preventive medicine meeting is the premier conference for preventive medicine professionals," says Jordan (Jud) Richland, MPH, executive director of the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM). The conference focuses on disease prevention and health promotion through clinical and environmental sessions, public health practice, prevention policy issues, quality improvement, informatics and eHealth." The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) is the national professional society for physicians committed to disease prevention and health promotion. Established in 1954, it currently has more than 2,000 members. ACPM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. This meeting is the groups 2nd annual conference, as many in the medical and public health communities now focus on proactively preventing public health problems.
