Intermec Introduces First Industrial-Duty Linear Imager

Intermec Technologies has announced the availability of Sabre® 1400, the first industrial-duty linear imager for heavy-duty applications in warehouse, distribution center and manufacturing facilities. As the first industrial-duty linear imager for heavy-duty applications in warehouse, distribution center and manufacturing facilities, Sabre 1400 combines the speed and performance of Intermecs patented Vista technology with the range and precision of laser scanners. It has a scanning range of up to 19 inches on damaged or poorly printed bar codes, a bright and sharp scan line, and ergonomic design for comfortable use over an entire shift.

Intermec Introduces First Industrial-Duty Linear Imager

Rugged Sabre 1400 Bar Code Scanner Delivers Better Performance and Price than Lasers

Singapore, February 07, 2002 -- Intermec Technologies Corp., a leader in global supply chain solutions, has expanded its line of linear imagers with the Sabre® 1400, the first industrial-duty linear imager for heavy-duty applications in warehouse, distribution center and manufacturing facilities.

The Sabre 1400 combines the speed and performance of Intermecs patented Vista technology with the range and precision of laser scanners. It has a scanning range of up to 19 inches on damaged or poorly printed bar codes, a bright and sharp scan line, and ergonomic design for comfortable use over an entire shift.

The Sabre 1400 can sustain 26 six-foot drops to concrete without failing, which is one of the toughest specs in the industry," said Henri Juvanon, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Intermec Technologies. It has superior bar code reading capability in a variety of lighting conditions, ranging from total darkness to direct sunlight. Combine that with SAE Class Three off-road vibration specs and an IP54-rated case, and you have the perfect scanner to survive virtually any harsh, industrial environment."

The low-cost solid-state scan engine used in the 1400 outperforms laser technology in several ways. For example, Intermecs Vista-powered scan engine has a depth of field of up to 19 inches, a range that satisfies the requirements of about 80% of the typical applications for bar code scanning.

The Sabre 1400 also has a high-performance custom ASIC chip for scan rates that are seven times faster than lasers (270 vs. 40 scans per second). Unlike lasers, the Sabre 1400 can decode both small, high-density bar codes (2 mil) and larger codes (100 mil) with a single scanner. It reads even badly damaged bar codes, ensuring faster, more accurate performance, and can capture bar codes from laptop display screens.

Finally, the solid state linear imaging technology in the Sabre 1400 scanner is significantly more reliable than laser scan engines. Lasers use a complex system of oscillating mirrors to automatically move the beam back and forth to successfully read a bar code symbol. Linear imagers are solid state with no moving parts.

ScanSource is excited about the potential of Intermecs advanced linear imaging technology in the industrial market," said Paul Constantine, director of merchandising for ScanSource, an Intermec reseller partner. Our mission is to 'empower solution providers, which includes helping them use new technology to make their solutions more affordable and productive. The Sabre 1400 is yet another new Intermec product that helps us accomplish this mission."

The Sabre 1400 uses Intermecs EasySet configuration software for quick and easy product configuration. Features can be added by simply scanning a barcode that configures the linear imager. The product is covered by a five-year warranty.

Pricing and Availability details

The Sabre 1400 is available with Intermec distributors. The price is US$595 inclusive of cable and 5 year warranty.
