High Touch" Relief for High Blood Pressure" by: Charlotte Meyer
February has been designated as National Heart Month", but not just in honor of Valentines Day! The American Heath Association wants Americans to take time recognize the importance of truly being kind to your heart! Why?
Close to 1 Million Americans lives are taken by cardiovascular disease. The death statistics from heart disease are higher than all forms of cancer put together. Remarkably, 30,000 more women than men dies each year from heart disease. One of the root causes of cardiovascular disease is high blood pressure. An estimated 24 percent of Americans, or 43 million adults live with hypertension and the American Health Association has determined that there are at least 56 million Americans suffering from some form of cardiovascular problem.
The West is just beginning to understand the therapeutic effects that deep tissue body massage, such as Japanese Shiatsu, and other forms of oriental body work, can have on protecting it by reducing, and helping to regulate the bodys blood pressure, and thereby reduce such gruesome statistics.
Shiatsu, Japanese acupressure, is acupuncture without needles. It is the most popular form of body therapy in Japan today.
The East has long known the benefits of massage for preventing, as well as reducing the effects of the common forms of heart disease: high blood pressure, coronary disease and stroke. Shiatsu Master, Norimasa Suzuki, of iDo Holistic Center in Mid-Town Manhattan, describes Shiatsus effect this way:
If you think of the bodys circulation system like a river of water, we know that stagnant water, or stagnant blood, both encourage disease and ill health. Shiatsu is a vital way to bring the bodys circulation back to a health flow, just like a freely running stream. With a healthy circulation system, toxins can be removed from the body, plaque can be removed from the heart walls and muscles, Shiatsu aids the proper function of the kidneys, and poorly functioning kidneys contributes to high blood pressure".
It is true that healthy kidney function helps protect the heart and thereby lower and even preventing high blood pressure. Master Suzuki adds that Shiatsu is very effective in strengthening the kidneys and heart by unblocking the heart and kidney meridians that supply blood and nutrients to those organs.
Shiatsu Master Suzuki has a number of Shiatsu clients who have seen a reduction in their blood pressure. As an example, he reports: Just recently, one client told me his blood pressure came down from 164 to 145 after three visits and it has remained lowered after three visits.
In a recent national survey, more than half of primary care and family physicians said they would encourage their patients to pursue massage therapy as a complement to medical care. And recently a London hospitals research demonstrated a significant lowering of blood pressure over a greater time than had been expected.
So be kind to your heart, get your blood pressure checked, stop smoking, eat right and treat your heart to a deep body tissue massage such as Shiatsu.
It can be used as a preventative treatment during sports training, reduce over all stress and protect the heart, while keeping the body and its circulation in balance.
