DJ Special.
We're DJ's, Not Astronauts"
David Sloly aka Streetboy strolls the doors at PCDJ. See what he had to say.
Its not often we get English DJ's visiting the PCDJ headquarters. This week however, we had the pleasure of meeting UK DJ David Sloly. Who? I hear you say. David Sloly has many an alias. One more common known is StreetBoy on London's Kiss 100 FM. David has been in the industry for a good 20 years and has worked within the TV and Radio industry alongside some of the big names of today such as Brandon Block, Paul Oakenfold and Steve Jackson. David has moved from BBC 1 Radio www.bbc.co.uk , Kiss 100 FM www.kiss100.co.uk to music television and was an intricate part of the UK's Rapture TV, a premium dance music show. Now David is a regular in Ibiza and can be found spinning in Space, Pacha and Manumission. He performed at the first live DJ broadcast from the Ibiza party island and followed with the first live DJ TV broadcasts, straight into the clubs.
What was he doing here in Clearwater Florida?
With an opportunity like this I couldn't help but ask a few questions. Here's what he had to say.
Clearwater Florida is a long way from Brixton, London. So, what are you doing here at PCDJ?
" I have been searching high and low for a stable piece of DJ music software. I found you lot on the Internet. I have been testing this PCDJ Red for a few weeks now and its just all there. I just had to come and see you."
What are you spinning these days? House? Drum and Bass?
" I play whatever i need. I hate the music policy in some clubs. Some clubs are so insistent on house. I often wind them up by playing multiple genres" David says.
" If I want to drop a completely different style in, I'll do it. Some people go to clubs and get so bored with the same old house. I see them on the floor, not really into it. I know what they want so I drop in a slightly different genre and watch them get off. It's all about that. That's what a DJ does"
Is that the ultimate kick?
" I am happy as long as I'm behind my decks and watching them go. Hopefully they'll be so tired by the end of the night, they won't fight !"
What was it that attracted you to PCDJ?
" I have 15 years of vinyl. Because I play multiple genres I need some serious content. I need to be able to watch the crowd and drop in the tune i need. Who knows what direction Ill go. That means a lot of records. That weighs a lot ! Last year I had to pay a small fortune to ship my records to Ibiza. They charge the earth and not to mention the state of the things when they get there. Those bags weigh a tonne. Have you ever walked through a club with 10,000 people in it banging every other leg with your boxes. In fact this is a common problem. Steve Jackson at Kiss 100 radio seriously has a problem now from carrying record bags. His shoulder has a real problem that makes it difficult from him to cue the tune up. I had to find a different way. MP3 was the way to go to get the content i need. PCDJ was the software that worked the best.
I see so PCDJ red was the solution for just that?
" Well yeah, that was a great reason but not all. To have all that content in MP3 format is great but i needed something that was reliable, stable and did the job well. The last thing I want was to have the program die in front of a killer crowd. I'd look stupid. PCDJ was all that was needed.
What else then was a need for you?
"The ability to be able to pull a track in an instant from an MP3 record case was also a must.
I remember i was playing in Manumission, Ibiza and the girl who sang the line in Groove Amada's " I see you Baby" , "Shake that ass" was there and wanted to sing over any track that was playing. I was so lucky to have the tune in the bag. She was amazed i had it... So was I ! That was a great night. I had everyone up on tables. She never stopped singing. I want to be able to do that every night. With PCDJ Red I can do that and never worry.
It's all in the bag and it doesn't weight a tonne !!
Would you every use PCDJ Red on BBC Radio 1
| | - Yeah, of course. I'd use this on Radio 1 and in fact any Radio. I often do the Ministry of Sound sessions and this would be ideal for the PCDJ. No worries, its all there."
There are a few DJ programs out there today. What about them?
- To be honest, i looked at them all. I had to. This is my job. I found them to be all toys. PCDJ was a serious piece of kit and as a DJ, I understood it. I have done a lot of testing on PCDJ Red over the last 4 weeks and I'd take it out, no problem. The look was right for me too. It was like 2 CD players but far more. No complicated buttons and knobs.
| We're DJ's not astronauts !"
Nicky Holloway only takes vinyl for show now. He's strictly digital. Would you do that?
" No, Not yet. I love my vinyl. But to have this to play with my vinyl is all i need. Who knows maybe one day this will be all i need."
What about the quality with MP3?
" When i play at Ministry of Sound they put it in mono and no one knows the difference. I would have everything at a high rate anyway so to me there is no difference."
What's coming in the future?
" I'm coming back here to see you guys again very soon. That's all Im saying for now. Mum's the word but you'll know first"
So you've heard it from the pro! Another gold star for PCDJ Red.
We enjoyed our afternoon tea with David and looked forward to a few beers with him before he flew back to sunny Brixton in London. We shall be seeing more from David in the future so watch this space. Speaking with David spurred encouragement to get out there again and get some gigs. I don't know how Clearwater, Florida can't possibly compare to Ibiza, but hey, it's a start!
