REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(February 14) -Webshots, the popular online photo service that revolutionized desktop pictures, has surpassed the 14 million mark for registered users.
This milestone was achieved barely four weeks after the company was reacquired by its founders from the now bankrupt Excite@Home.
"This confirms Webshots position as the most popular Internet destination for enjoying and sharing photography," said Andrew Laakmann, Webshots founder and CEO.
Webshots was purchased by Excite@Home in October 1999 for approximately $82.5 million. When Excite@Home declared bankruptcy a
year later, the original founders reacquired the company in bankruptcy court for $2.4 million.
"Webshots' impressive metrics, including 14 million members and 3 billion full-screen photo downloads, demonstrate consumers' robust enthusiasm for working with digital photos," according to InfoTrends Research Group analyst Lia Schubert.
In December 2001, Webshots was the sixth most popular software download with more than 5.5 million unique visitors and users spending an average of 15.4 minutes online per month, according to Media Metrix.
