Hairy deal with oil clean-up Patents

World Response Group, Inc. (WRG) announces the acquisition of the patents for an innovative oil recovery product invented by Mr. Phil McCrory, a hair stylist in Huntsville, Al. NASA conducted an experiment using a prototype bulk hair filter to treat an oil-water mixture from an actual fuel oil spill. Samples of the free stream effluent were taken at the beginning, middle and end of the filtration process. No smell of fuel oil was evident. The lab reports stated that the effluent contained no more than 17 parts/million after one pass through the hair. The EPA standard for discharge is 15 parts/million. Further testing verified that hair makes excellent oil adsorbent permitting the oil to be recovered from the hair allowing for the oil and hair to be reused, unlike products such as a polypropylene mat.

Huntsville, Al. 11 Feb 2002- World Response Group, Inc. (WRG) announces the acquisition of the patents for an innovative oil recovery product invented by Mr. Phil McCrory, a hair stylist in Huntsville, Al. While watching TV coverage of the Valdez oil spill, Mr. McCrory noticed that an otters' fur was saturated with oil. After much experimenting, he discovered that human hair was ideal as an oil adsorbent. When testing by NASA confirmed the efficacy of human hair adsorption. Mr. McCrory spent the next several years developing and patenting what we now call the OttiMat(tm). Otti the Sea Otter is our product icon created to represent the many creatures who have suffered so greatly because of oil spills.

Product Tested:
NASA conducted an experiment using a prototype bulk hair filter to treat a partially filled 55-gallon drum of oil-water mixture from an actual fuel oil spill. Human hair was provided directly from Mr. McCrory's hair salon. The hair was placed inside a 55-gallon drum on a mesh filter. The contaminated oil-water mixture was rapidly poured through the human hair filter and drained into a clean 55-gallon drum. Approximately 300 pounds of oil-water mixture was poured through the prototype system. It took 13 minutes. Samples of the free stream effluent were taken at the beginning, middle and end of the filtration process. No smell of fuel oil was evident. The lab reports stated that the effluent contained no more than 17 parts/million after one pass through the hair. The EPA standard for discharge is 15 parts/million. Further testing verified that hair makes an excellent oil adsorbent.

One of the main benefits realized in this experiment was that oil could also be recovered from the hair. Human hair does not "absorb" (or soak in) oil as does cloth, but rather it "adsorbs" (or holds on to) it. A product such as a polypropylene mat "absorbs" oil, and the oil bonds to the material. So much so that the oil cannot be extracted. But with the OttiMat the oil is "adsorbed", meaning that the oil is adhering to the surfaces of the hair. It is this unique property, coupled with the viscosity of petroleum-based products that allows the OttiMat(tm) to be squeezed or centrifuged for recovery of the oil. The mat can be wrung out for re-use many times or burned as industrial fuel.

Efficiency of the OttiMat(tm):
The OttiMat(tm), made from recycled human hair, is one of the most efficient oil recovery products on the market today. The OttiMat(tm) can be recycled during an oil spill cleanup and up to 98% of the oil can be recovered. In the US alone, over 49 million pounds of human hair are disposed of in landfills each year. The OttiMat(tm) avoids the use of toxic oil cleaners in our water sources by using hair, a non-decomposing material.

Product Introduction:
World Response Group, Inc. is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the OttiMat(tm) for purchase by industrial users and the general public. We are presently establishing large scale manufacturing sites both internationally and within the USA.
