SECOND MIDNIGHT LACE ANNAPOLIS TO ST. MICHAELS RENDEZVOUS ANNOUNCED FOR JUNE 8-9, 2002
Annapolis, MD. The Midnight Lace Owners Group has announced its second rendezvous to be held the weekend of June 8-9, 2002. Only 20 of these unique, 44-foot, head-turning vintage motor yachts were ever built. There were also several 52-foot yachts and one 65 footer built. Eight or more are scheduled to congregate in Annapolis, Md. Saturday morning June 8, and parade in formation to St. Michaels, Maryland on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay to meet and socialize for two days.
The Midnight Lace is a trip back to the classic DCFB (Dual Cabin Flying Bridge) designs of the 1940s. They are jet black , trimmed in glossy teak and are pampered by their owners, several of whom are antique car and furniture collectors. When you see these yachts, you will know why they attract that kind of owner.
Naval Architect Tom Fexas, the father of the Midnight Lace design and Don Canavan, the man who marketed and delivered these yachts, that were built at the Cheoy Lee Golden Wave Shipyard in Kowloon during the early 1980s will be on hand to review the fleet and discuss their plans for the next generation of Midnight Lace yachts.
Before the current fever over express cruisers, open cockpit lobster boats, picnic boats and the like, Fexas drew and built this classic, highly desirable motor yacht, that everyone now seems to be trying to copy. But none of the new versions quite look or feel like the Lace. This will be a great opportunity to see the boat that some think started it all.
The Laces will meet in Annapolis between 10 and 11 on June 8th and plan to arrive at the St. Michaels Marina after noon the same day. St. Michaels Marina is adjacent to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland.
