Who is Shonda Sue?
Shonda Sue is a teenage country and gospel recording artist from Indianapolis with three albums to her credit since age 8. Her most recent accomplishments include recording her first Nashville project, "Girl Thang," the launch of her official website and the development of the official fan club.
INDIANAPOLIS-Since the age of 8, Indianapolis native Shonda Sue has been pursuing her dream of becoming a country music entertainer.
At age 8, she recorded her first country album and began performing at fairs, festivals and other events. When she was 10, she recorded a gospel album and at 13, released her second country album, a Nashville project called "Girl Thang."
"I loved Nashville," Shonda Sue says. "I love to sing, to watch people's faces when they hear me sing - especially the children."
Now 14, Shonda Sue is looking forward to expanding her horizons beyond her typical performance schedule based, until recently, for the most part in Indiana. She desires to line up performances in other states and is ready to sing either country or gospel music.
Her parents, Kimberly and Craig Moore, enrolled Shonda Sue in a home school program two years ago in order to give the young entertainer more time to practice and more flexibility for scheduling performances. Except for the occasional instance when her mother has to make sure she has completed her homework before practicing, Shonda Sue has managed to keep up with her coursework - often working ahead.
Beginning in the spring and through the fall, Shonda Sue's schedule is filled with performances at fairs, festivals and other events. Shonda Sue has performed the National Anthem at Indiana Pacer games, Indianapolis Indians games and was requested to fill in when Trisha Yearwood was unable to attend the inaugural game for Indiana's Womens NBA team, the Indiana Fever.
"It's a lot of fun," Shonda Sue says, "though I may miss some of the things other teenagers do." School dances and parties, for example, are things she has had to sacrifice in order to pursue her career.
"I am doing what I love," she explains. "I have wanted to sing since I first heard Reba McEntire when I was younger."
In fact, when she first began singing, Shonda Sue emulated the styles of Reba McEntire and Faith Hill, her favorite country singers. Since then she has developed her own style, but still performs covers of McEntire, Hill and others. Now, however, she has her own music to sing.
When the opportunity presented itself for Shonda Sue to record in Nashville, she was able to choose from more than 300 selections of original music to be featured on her album. "Girl Thang" features five originals plus five cover tunes.
"I got to work with some really good people," she says of the musicians, back-up vocals and production staff.
Her biggest dream is to be featured on CMT, a station that is on frequently in the Moore home on the northwestside of Indianapolis. She wants to be able to share her love of music and her God-given talent with the world.
