New Authors Featured on C-SPAN BookTV
C-SPAN BookTV, normally focusing on bestselling authors, takes a look this week at six self-published authors in the Washington, DC area. Filmed at the Reston, VA Barnes & Noble, the event focused on the business of self-publishing.
Reston, VA -- Several local authors are featured this week on C-SPANs BookTV, a national program which features many bestselling titles and authors. Airing Saturday, February 23 at 2:00 pm, the program focuses on the business of publishing, as well as the individual authors experiences and books. It was filmed January 24, 2002 during New Writers Night at the Reston, Virginia, Barnes & Noble.
The panel included the following local authors:
• Mike Maggio is the author of "Sifting Through the Madness," a collection of his short fiction stories. Mike is a poet and fiction writer whose work has appeared in many national journals and anthologies including Pig Iron, Red Hen Press and Pheobe.
• Charles Sheehan-Miles is the author of the critically acclaimed "Prayer at Rumayla: A novel of the Gulf War." Charles is a former President of the National Gulf War Resource Center. • Austin Camacho is the author of "Blood and Bone," a mystery novel set in Washington DC and Northern Virginia. After 15 years as a print and broadcast journalist for the Department of Defense, this is Austins first published work of fiction.
• Edward Molnar is the author of "Shadows on a Mirror," a metaphysical thriller.
• David Shapiro is the author of "Not Invented Here," a collection of fact-based stories of the aerospace industry.
• B. Wallace is the author of "The Mark of the Werewolf," a horror novel.
Why Self-Publishing
The event highlighted the fact that new technologies in publishing have made it cost effective for more authors to self-publish than ever before, creating new markets for writers who are starting out. In recent years the market for major publishers has dramatically shrunk as independent book stores go out of business in favor of mega-chains around the country. At the same time, new markets have opened as new technologies, including print-on-demand and the internet, allow authors to develop their own customer base. This panel included six authors who have used print-on-demand technology to produce their books.
