releases new web site, to promote Slovakia to the world.
Introducing a comprehensive web resource about Slovakia,
with information about culture, history and tourism, a
discussion forum and an online Slovak language course.
Slovakia - March 2002 - A new web resource about Slovakia
has recently been launched, with the goal of promoting the
Central European country to the western world. Written in
English, Slovakia - Heart of Europe includes up-to-date
factual information, as well as interesting articles and
original features about Slovakia.
'What we are trying to achieve,' explained Maria Salisova,
webmaster and co-founder of Slovakia - Heart of Europe, 'is
to put Slovakia on the map. To introduce people to
Slovakia's natural beauty and to highlight what the country
has to offer the tourist coming from the West.'
Writer David James, who contributes regular features to the
site, echoes this enthusiasm. 'When I was approached to
write for Slovakia - Heart of Europe, I jumped at the
chance. Slovakia is relatively unknown in the West as a
tourist destination, and although that is perhaps one of
its many charms, I felt it important to help promote the
country'.
However, the web site is a lot more than just a travel site
about Slovakia. As Mrs. Salisova explained, 'Primarily the
site is aimed at second, third and fourth generation
Slovaks, living in the US and Canada. They are North
American citizens, who speak English, but who are very
interested in their heritage and what is going on in the
"Old Country", today.'
Many thousands of Slovaks left their country at the end of
the C19th and at the beginning of the C20th, immigrating to
the US, Canada and Australia. Mrs Salisova is well aware of
this and of the Slovak community living outside of
Slovakia's borders. 'We hope to bring together all those
English-speaking Slovakians from around the globe, and use
Slovakia - Heart of Europe as a base where they can share
their experiences and discuss issues about Slovakia.'
The web site also includes a comprehensive travel guide, a
genealogy resource, culture and history sections, a
discussion forum, quizzes, polls, puzzles and games, an
extensive links directory and even a free online Slovak
language course.
