Unlike text-based search portals such as Yahoo! which earn roughly 50% of their revenue from displaying adverts within their search results, adverts form the basis of both Indexads results and revenue. For example, a search for Electrical Goods on Yahoo.co.uk yields thirty-three web sites and one ubiquitous advert from Amazon; the same search on Indexads yields 28 various banner adverts and logos from electrical goods retailers. Both use adverts to earn revenue, the difference is Indexads has many more adverts; in fact Indexads claims to currently list more than 3,000 on its growing index.

Using adverts instead of text as a means of navigation is an important difference argues Indexads founder Adam Neale. Branding is very important to companies, especially on the web where there are so many sites competing for attention in the same space. Adam admits Indexads has a massive hill to climb if it can ever dream of competing with the likes of Yahoo! We believe we have something different to offer both the searching public and potential clients, in six months time we should have a pretty good idea of how well we have convinced them."
