K3 Business Technology Group plc has won a 35,000 order for its Micross for Windows (MFW) manufacturing control software solution from Avionic Services based in Kingston, Surrey. The new system will greatly improve visibility and tracking of orders and lead times, cost and stock control, manufacturing efficiency and centralise procurement.

Avionic Services Plc provides air traffic control equipment, systems integration services, airfield ground lighting, turnkey project management, consultancy services and flight inspection services in the UK and internationally. Some of its recent installations include air traffic control towers at London Manston, Cambridge and Liverpool airports.

The company has grown rapidly since it was formed seven years ago and has just been recognised as one of the fastest growing technology companies with the Technology Fast 50 Award. It has doubled in size for the last four years and now employs 55 people, 40 of whom are engineers. From 1998 to 2000, Avionic's sales grew at a rate of 244% a year. It now has a turnover of 2.4 million which is expected to increase this year.

"Being a small firm we are inherently flexible and need to respond quickly to quotation and other customer requests. We also need to centralise procurement procedures throughout the company," says Martin Read, Sales & Marketing Manager ATC Systems. The company currently uses Excel spreadsheets and Sage accounts software.

"We evaluated four manufacturing control systems before selecting K3 Business Technology's MFW system. All the systems had their plus and minus points but we chose MFW because it is a proven, well-established system. Some of our staff had used it at other companies and we considered it a low risk investment. We also felt that the K3 people took the time to really understand our needs.

"We are expecting a number of important benefits," adds Martin Read, "including greater visibility and tracking of orders and lead times, purchasing efficiencies due to bulk buying, cost and stock control, management reporting and improvements in general manufacturing efficiency."

The company is planning an aggressive implementation plan for the 10-user system which will run on an NT server. It begins in March and will go live in June 2002.
