Lessons Learned on the Farm
A Step Back in Time when Life Was Simpler
And Family Was Celebrated
by
Phyllis Porter Dolislager

FAIRFAX, VA - Believing that there are valuable lessons of life and faith to be gained by examining our past, Phyllis Porter Dolislager has recorded her familys unique heritage of having not only lived, but also prospered, on a dairy farm in the 50s and 60s. The world was overcoming the seriousness of the World War II era. Hope and prosperity awaited those who were willing to do the work. Art Deco raised it head, rock and roll emerged, the word, sex," was said aloud, and in the midst of those changes, her family exemplified success in the face of struggles-her polio, fathers heart attack at age 39, and brothers loss of a limb in a farm accident. Lessons Learned on the Farm truly presents how life, work, and faith were intertwined.

The family learned persistence is the face of success. They learned that hard work and integrity go hand in hand. They learned relationships, working together, paid dividends. They were just doing it" long before Nike. Divorce was rare, faith was valued, and families supported one another. Many readers will be amazed at just how much work it was to run a farm in the 50s compared to the commercialized farming enterprises seen today. Younger readers may actually learn where milk comes from.

As America has moved into the high tech computer age, it has tended to discard the ladder on which it ascended to those exciting heights. The work ethic and faith (brick and mortar) that were the basis of past successes have almost been forgotten. This book honors those men and women who worked side by side to achieve success. It validates the family business as an appropriate goal. Even though this is a slice of life/history from Michigan, there are numerous carry-over concepts for others who are deciding their future or reminiscing about their past.

Lessons Learned on the Farm shows that rules and discipline do give structure to childrens lives. It shows the importance of families spending time together-working and playing. It provides examples of lessons learned through having chores to do.

The history buffs of the 50s and 60s will not be disappointed. There are plenty of photos (70+) and details (1963 Farm Diary) to excite them. Those who grew up on farms, whether working or gentleman farmers, will enjoy having their memories stirred. Perhaps theyll remember stories to tell their own grandchildren.

Phyllis Dolislager is an educator and a writer. She has her MA in Curriculum and Instruction from Michigan State University. Currently she is an adjunct writing instructor for Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL. She also does contract writing and editing and gives workshops on writing ones story/memoir. Dolislager is a member of the Pen Women of America, a motivational/inspirational speaker, and a polio survivor.

As a Christmas gift to her sons and grandchildren in 2001, she wrote a 125-page book for them, her Testament, as in Last Will and Testament, telling stories that illustrated her values. She and her husband are currently writing childrens books. When she lived in Rockford and Grand Rapids, her husband was one of three men to originally computerize Amway, and she taught writing classes at Cornerstone University. (Both of her brothers continue to farm in Courtland and Coral.)
