Kari will be supported by Ben Lewis, Larry Kohut and Gerald Dowd (piano, bass, drums) and the group will not only perform tunes from her new CD "The Whale and the Elephant", but for the first time, they will also debut Kari's original songs!
Daughter of Grammy Award winning symphony and opera conductor John Nelson (Chicago Lyric Opera, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris), Kari first dreamt of opera diva status as a child, then attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, fronted a heavy metal band in the early 90's, sang backing vocals for a variety of funk bands including Chicago's "Brother Brother" and "Funkhouse" in the latter 90's, and finally joined up with "The Drovers" for the spring and summer of 2000. Behind the scenes, she was studying jazz and working it all out with steady weekly performances at Pops for Champagne on Sheffield from 1997-2000. A Chicago darling, Kari was a well kept secret until now. With the release of "The Whale and the Elephant", her move to LA last year, and her recent songwriting, Kari is at the beginning of an amazing solo career.
Produced by Chicago's own Ray Quinn (owner of Martyrs' on N. Lincoln) and boasting gorgeous performances by Chicago musicians Tom Garling, Larry Gray, Hamid Drake, Liz Knowles and The Trio listed above, "The Whale and the Elephant" offers diverse choices in material and instrumentation, and is a beautiful collection of showcase performances. An exciting version of Chris Whitley's "Flat as the Earth" works well with pieces from local songwriters Paul Cebar and Miga, in addition to a few jazz standards and more...
"The Whale and the Elephant" will be available for purchase at the Martyrs' show, and almost every track is available on MP3.com for your listening pleasure.
