Most people think of rock & roll pictures when they talk about my work," said Jim Marshall. 1963 is a departure from my usual subject of rock stars and includes photographs that I shot on the streets and from assignments in one specific year. Included in this show is a selection of five never before published photographs taken outside the Time Life Building in New York City the day JFK was killed. They show the absolute horror, shock and disbelief in peoples eyes."
Marshall was using a Leica M2 in those days and carried it with him everywhere he went. This exhibit profoundly captures this brief time in history, and like all of Marshalls photos, the subjects tell it like it was; a raw, vulnerable and innocent time. Marshall is a true photo historian. Please include this landmark show in your calendar section for June.
A Comment from Jim Marshall about 1963...
They were lean times," said Jim Marshall referring to his life in 1963 where he lived in a modest $100-a-month apartment in Greenwich Village. At that time, I worked mostly on assignment with the Saturday Evening Post and the major record companies. It was a profound year in history, and that is documented in this show of photos, many of which have never been published or seen by the public."
