WSI Acquires Pilot Weather Advisor

Leader in Aviation Weather To Offer Weather to the Cockpit" Brings Real-time Information to Pilots Where They Need It Most

BILLERICA, MA -- April 8, 2002 -- WSI Corporation today announced that it has purchased the real-time in-flight Pilot Weather Advisor technology from ViGYAN. With this purchase, WSI will introduce real-time in-flight weather information services later this year, building on WSI's already strong market position in aviation. This acquisition also positions WSI for market expansion in marine and ground transportation applications. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Today, we enjoy a leadership position in aviation by providing reliable and relevant weather information to airlines, FBOs, corporate flight departments, and private pilots," said Mark Gildersleeve, President of WSI. "Every day, thousands of pilots trust WSI for their pre-flight briefings. With Pilot Weather Advisor, we will be able to deliver the most accurate, up-to-date weather information to our customers wherever they are - including the cockpit," he added. This same technology will also form the foundation for WSI expansion into marine and ground transportation markets later this year.

"We are thrilled to be part of WSI, given their financial strength and reputation for quality service and support in the general aviation market," said Keith Hoffler of ViGYAN, who joins WSI as part of the transaction. "We thought about going it alone, but realized that combining our leading edge technology with the market leader in aviation weather was the smartest way to ensure success. WSI was the clear choice." WSIs Pilotbrief service was recently voted the #1 weather briefing service in Professional Pilot magazines annual reader poll for the fourth year in a row.

The WSI system uses satellite technology to continuously broadcast current weather information and near-term forecasts to any aircraft, ship or vehicle equipped with WSI's special purpose antenna and receiver. According to Lynne Wilson, Executive Vice President of WSIs Transportation Group, We are designing the service to offer maximum customer choice and flexibility. Pilots will be able to view WSIs rich, high quality, context sensitive weather information automatically, in real-time, on a variety of portable devices and panel-mounted multi-function displays. This is a significant improvement over the pilot-initiated request/response in-flight systems on the market today." WSIs flagship radar mosaic, NOWrad, depicting areas of rain, snow and mixed precipitation, along with cell tops and movement, graphical METARs and TAFs, plotted SIGMETs and AIRMETs will be part of the aviation service. Pricing for the service will consist of a one-time equipment fee and a monthly subscription fee.
