PRESS RELEASE - PUBLICATION OF "THE CRISIS IN AMERICA'S NURSING HOMES - WHAT ARE WE DOING WRONG?"
"She had this bedsore on her hip that was so deep ... that I could see the hip socket and leg bone moving inside the hole."
It is no secret that the health system of the United States is in a state of crisis, and that many of the nation's elders are going uncared-for. However, no one has put into words what so many of us only partly understand - the reasons behind the situation. Every day in America's nursing homes, old men and women, face sexual assault, beatings, racial abuse, inadequate care and maltreatment. They die of malnutrition and dehydration, among other avoidable complaints. They are left lying in their own waste, even when they are physically able to visit the bathroom. Did I say "America"? Doesn't this description sound more like what one would expect to read about a developing country? Yes and yes. Third world conditions prevail in many nursing homes all over the country. Moreover, this appalling situation does not just affect nursing home residents and their families, either. Nurses and nurses' aides have one of the highest rates of work-related illness in the land - and one of the lowest rates of remuneration. It is hardly surprising that fewer and fewer young people are choosing to go into the caring profession - and that more and more nursing homes are prepared to cast a blind eye on the criminal records of potentially dangerous male and female nurses and nurses' aides.
Author Guy Seaton is better qualified than anybody to discuss the unhappy situation is. He has been in the business since he was a young man in the 1960s, working his way up from being a primary caregiver to reach the position of nursing home owner. He was there at the birth of Medicare and Medicaid - healthcare payment systems that were supposed to revolutionize the way the most vulnerable members of our society are cared for - but which did not. He has worked in the healthcare profession for his entire adult life, as a caregiver, an inspector, an administrator, and a manager. Now, giving us the benefit of his three decades of experience, Guy lifts the lid on a can of worms that is about to blow up- the health system of the United States.
