NORR Limited, Architects & Engineers has been awarded the Ontario Association of Architects prestigious 25 Year Award for Terminal One at Torontos Lester B. Pearson International Airport. The award recognizes projects built between 1951 and 1976, which have stood the test of time and are noteworthy examples of architecture in Ontario.
Terminal One, designed by NORRs predecessor firm, John B. Parkin, was initially known as Aeroquay One and opened to the public in 1964. The building was the first of four similar terminals proposed in the firms Master Plan for airport development prepared in the mid-1950s.
Terminal One was widely acclaimed for its innovative planning and design concepts and has been a major influence on subsequent airport development around the world. The influence of well known Modernist architects, such as Gropius, LeCorbusier and Mies van der Rohe is evident in the design with the extensive use of curtain wall and the clear expression of structure, in both steel and concrete.
The building and its services have been expanded and modified over the years as LBPIA has grown to meet the demands of the airline industry. Through all of this change, the building has retained its prominence as an important example of modern architecture in Canada.
Scheduled for demolition in late 2003, Terminal One will have stood as well recognized example of architectural monument for almost 40 years.
