YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF
Be Yourself at Work
Ric Giardina
Early on we develop the ability to determine what those in authority want from us. Our careers seem to flourish to the extent that we are able to continue to give our employers what they want. The "company" man or woman gets the promotion, the title, the salary and benefits. What does being a "company" man or woman mean? For far too many, it means that one day, you discover that what the company wants from you is not consistent with what you want from you, but you do what the company wants anyway! This habitual putting work before self creates stress of almost incalculable measure. Is it possible in todays corporate environment to relieve ourselves of this burden and just be ourselves at work?
In his groundbreaking new book, YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF: Be Yourself at Work (Beyond Words, April 10, 2002), Ric Giardina, founder and president of The Spirit Employed Company, explains that the answer is a resounding yes! He states that you can and must be yourself at work. By doing so, you will not only be much happier, but you will achieve better on-the-job performance and thus, be rewarded in spectacular ways. Relationships with your peers, other executives, staff, vendors, and customers will be completely transformed. You will find yourself in demand as a manager, an employee, and--all too rare in the workplace-as a friend, advisor and confidant. Ric explains that when people come to work without their spiritual values, attitudes, and behaviors, they are leaving behind their authentic selves. Thus, todays workplaces are filled with people who live two lives: an "on the job" life and an authentic life outside of work.
Ric proves that there are advantages to being in touch with your Authentic Self at work and those advantages can serve you and your employer exceedingly well. The Authentic Self is the true source of creativity, innovation, and intuition. It is the place from which spring self-esteem, compassion, understanding, insight, and even forgiveness. When you separate yourself from your authentic self in an attempt to be more focused on your corporate or organizational responsibilities, you lose much of the competitive edge that is unique to you alone.
YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF is based on two very simple principles. First, that you are 100 percent responsible for your responses to what happens to you. Second, that you have the power of choice to transform your experience of the world around you at any time and in any circumstances. With these principles in mind, Ric created the "360 Degree Arc of Authenticity"- you can completely transform your experience at work (and in reality your entire life) by consciously creating a circle of authenticity around yourself in your workplace. You do this by being fully present to each event in your workday, and with each and every person with whom you interact in the course of your workday. You create the 360 Degree Arc of Authenticity by consciously looking at what you can do to make the situation better or the relationship more meaningful right now.
The first section of YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF teaches exactly how to be authentic with yourself in the workplace and why this is so essential to your long-term workplace success. You will learn how to build and protect your workplace sanctuary, how to keep your perspective along the way, and how to use your own personal discovery system. A few key elements discussed in this section are: seeking life balance (work toward a more balanced approach to life will result in a greater expression of the Authentic Self); developing your own intuition (intuition is a part of your Authentic Self that has information that your Corporate Self probably wants to hear); being truly committed (be so committed to your cause that you will take the next step even when you are not certain there is anything to step onto); embracing change (welcome and embrace change and you will succeed in expressing your Authentic Self and ensure your continued success in your ever-changing work environment); managing "Monkey Mind" (learn how to handle decision paralysis and negativity so you can keep your attention on doing your best at work); and declaring all things in order (have a visceral understanding that things happen in the right order and in the right way and that trusting in the divine order of things allows you to replace your negative thoughts with positive thoughts).
The middle section of YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF describes how to be authentic with others and why doing so will lead to discovering a real sense of community in the workplace. Readers learn how to create name recognition, how to expand their definition of responsibility, how to mend relationships, how to manage workplace communications, how to always tell their truth in the workplace, how to keep agreements, how to build a personal support system and even how to mentor someone!
The last section of the book explains how to be authentic to a higher power and covers everything from how to see yourself on a spiritual path to realizing the importance of asking for help from above.

Being yourself at work isnt always an easy task! It is precisely for this reason that the book was written to be used as a reference book, rather than as something read once and set aside. By putting into practice the ideology and techniques contained within YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF, you will find that having magnificent results by simply being who you are is a lot easier than having satisfactory results trying to be someone you arent!
