FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Groove Collective hits Russia with Bernie Worrell
On April 27th and 28th, New York's genre bending groove pioneers, Groove
Collective, will take the stage in Moscow, joined by P-Funk co-founder,
Bernie Worrell. Having just returned from a European tour where they were
joined by legendary trombonist Fred Wesley ( James Brown, Horny Horns,
Parliament-Funkadelic), Groove Collective is clearly having a good year, but
more importantly , an inspiring one. "We are really excited to be playing
with funk heavyweights like Fred and Bernie;" says Drummer Genji Siraisi,
"It is an education to play classics like 'Pass the Peas, and ' Get Up for
the Downstroke with the musicians who created them!" For the Moscow dates,
Groove Collectives lineup will be: Bernie Worrell on Hammond B-3 and
Clavinet, Jay Rodriguez on saxophones and flute, Fatoye Chris Theberge on
percussion, Barney McAll on keyboards, Genji Siraisi on drums, Fabio Morgera
on trumpet and Jonathan Maron on Bass. Listeners can expect to hear not only
Parliament-Funkadelic classics, such as 'Red Hot Mama but to hear Mr.
Worrell stretching out on Groove Collective tunes as well as music by jazz
visionaries Sun Ra and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. " With a creative musician of
Bernies calibre," explains saxophonist Jay Rodriguez, "Theres no telling
where this music could go-his range is enormous." This would seem to be a
perfect fit, because as anyone who knows Groove Collective will tell you, a
single evening of music can include heavy funk, afro-cuban , electronica,
deep house and of course, jazz.
Groove Collective has recorded six albums to date, the last one "Live and
Hard to Find" was released on their own label and is available at their
website, www.groovecollective.com. They have toured and recorded with
artists as varied as Widespread Panic, The Dave Matthews Band and Grammy
winning Cuban Piano Legend Chucho Valdes. Though a busy touring band for
several years, GCs members found themselves happiest when dividing their
time between home and the road a little more evenly. " Were based in New
York and thats the creative environment thats made our music possible,"
explains percussionist Fatoye Chris Theberge, " So, in preparation for our
seventh album, weve decided to tour less frequently, and instead to focus
on writing, producing and remixing...." "And doing New York shows, " adds
bassist Jonathan Maron, " when we were on the road all the time, we
would never play at home more than twice a year-now we can get back into the
rhythm of having regular New York shows, where we have access to countless
guest musicians, vocalists and DJs....and we can go all night." Onetime
regulars at Manhattan nightspots such as Tramps, Wetlands, and Bowery Ballroom,
the bands moved all of its operations to Williamsburg Brooklyn to a club called Northsix
(www.northsix.com ). Catch their 4/20 show at North Six in Williamsburg Brooklyn,
