Celebrating and Understanding Spirituals and Old Time Gospel Music
with
Ms. Aleece Carson
Music Historian and Director of Music Ministries, Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, San Francisco
The Negro Spirituals are a miraculous, world-renowned music whose powers and gifts enabled Black slaves to endure. They gave birth to the old time, soul stirring gospel music, and the music of pioneers like Charles A. Tindley, Thomas A. Dorsey and of later gospel songwriters. Both spirituals and gospel music are a part of the great African-African and American musical heritage. Ms. Carson will use musical demonstrations, historical information, and audience participation to show connections between the two musical genres.
