Grammy Award Winning Steel Band to Perform at Barbour Magnet Middle School

Detroit, Michigan -- April 22, 2002 -- Hugh Borde's Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band will perform at Barbour Magnet Middle School on Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at 6:00 pm. The band's appearance is part of the Detroit Artists Connection Project, presented with the support of the City of Detroit Cultural Affairs Department and Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs.

The band's repertoire ranges from calypso and reggae music to classical and rock and roll. Borde helped pioneer steel band music in the 1940s, and was a founder of the Steel Band Movement in 1950. His group toured for two years with Liberace, and won a 1972 Grammy Award for their gold album "Liberace Presents." The group has performed for the Queen of England and two U.S. Presidents, and at venues as varied as Las Vegas, Carnegie Hall, and numerous state fairs. Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band is on its way to Hollywood to appear in a movie about Liberaces life, starring Robin Williams.

Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band will perform the evening of May 7, 2002, including two songs with the BMMS Concert Choir, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Detroit Artists Connection Project is a program in which prominent Detroit-area artists present workshops to Barbour students, and then perform with the students at an evening concert. This is unique in that music students have the opportunity to apply and experience what they are taught by the artists.

Marcus Belgrave, world famous jazz trumpeter, is the next artist who will present a workshop to both band and choir students, with an evening concert on May 23, 2002.
