of Production Data in a Computational Grid-
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (April 22, 2002) -- Objectivity Inc., the leading provider of high performance database engines for the management of complex data, today announced that Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) has stored over 500 Terabytes of production data using Objectivity/DB.
At SLAC, Objectivity/DB is being used by the scientists of the International BaBar Collaboration who are investigating the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the universe. The BaBar Collaboration has written over 5 million lines of C++ and Java code to refine and analyze the data produced by colliding two particle beams into each other in the PEP II accelerator at SLAC. The data objects are stored in an Objectivity/DB federated database powered by over 100 servers (40 user data servers and 60 lock or journal data servers). A farm of over 2000 processors, organized into a grid of smaller farms, accesses the federated database.
"Achieving our demanding goals was a daunting task, but we soon learned how to tune the system to achieve massive throughput," according to Jacek Becla, BaBar database group manager. "Objectivity worked with us to enhance and add tools to make this easier. As we progressed we discovered the full potential of our database system so it can easily keep up with constant increases in data rates. I don't think that most application designers realize just how powerful an object oriented database system can be, which is a shame." adds Becla.
Objectivity/DB is running in a heterogeneous environment at SLAC. The Sun SPARC processors run the Solaris operating system and the Intel processors run Linux. SLAC has collaborated with Objectivity Inc. to create the Objectivity Open File System (OOFS). It provides a transparent interface between the Objectivity/DB Advanced Multithreaded Servers and

SLAC's High Performance Storage System. SLAC scientists have also integrated a Generalized Security Architecture layer with Objectivity/DB, allowing them to use their existing security mechanisms to safeguard the data.
"Creating and reliably maintaining a Petabyte database is a daunting goal for our industry," said Leon Guzenda, chief technology officer at Objectivity, Inc. "This is a very significant milestone for SLAC and Objectivity on our road to that goal. The close collaboration between the BaBar scientists and the Objectivity Engineering and Technical Services groups has been a major factor in achieving this success."
"An increasing number of our commercial, government and scientific customers are deploying Very Large Databases and high performance Computational Grids. The pioneering work at SLAC and the improvements that we have jointly made to Objectivity/DB are immediately beneficial to that community." according to John Jarrell senior executive vice president, sales and marketing at Objectivity.
