NUW Authors Take the World

The movie industry has indie filmmakers. The music industry has garage bands. And the publishing industry has NUW authors anxious to provide an alternative to the stale, recycled plots continually pumped out by the New York publishing houses.

The movie industry has indie filmmakers. The music industry has garage bands. And the publishing industry has NUW authors anxious to provide an alternative to the stale, recycled plots continually pumped out by the New York publishing houses.

Not the Usual Way (NUW) is an international online independent authors community whose Members refuse to let what they write be dictated by the-powers-that-be at major traditional publishing houses. All of the writers at NUW have chosen to take a nontraditional route to publication. Some authors are exploring e-publishing, others are using print-on-demand technology to get their words to the masses, some go with independent traditional publishers and still others are going the time-honored route of self-publishing.

Among NUWs ranks are founder Kristie Leigh Maguire whose novel 'Emails from the Edge: The Life of an Expatriate Wife was published by the well known POD publisher PageFree Publishing, NUW Enforcer Mark Haeuser who has books published utilizing the POD method with iUniverse and the independent traditional publishing route with Crystal Dreams Publishing, and NUW Secretary Lori Enos whose e-published self-help book The Portable Coach has continually appeared on e-book bestseller lists.

One of NUWs better assets is author Janet Elaine Smith who serves as the groups Official Cheerleader. I believe NUW may be the only authors community who has an official cheerleader to keep its members motivated," Maguire was quoted as saying. Janet currently has eight books in print-all published untraditionally-and several more in the works. Janet has even turned down a contract with a big-name publisher to stay a NUW author."

Although the books published by NUW authors range from psychological thrillers to light hearted comedies," Smith stated, They are all well written tales crafted by highly talented authors. The group even has an e-book, 'NUW Roads Traveled, in the works to let readers sample selected works by NUW authors. 'NUW Roads Traveled is being compiled by NUW Assistant Manager Annette Gisby and edited by NUW author Dehanna Bailey."

Although the NUW authors use the Internet to communicate, nontraditional publishing is not a new phenomenon. You can bet if that the Internet had been around in the 19th century, Mark Twain, who self-published Huckleberry Finn, and Walt Whitman, who self-published Leaves of Grass, would have been charter members.
