Palisade Systems Inc., a leading provider of internal network defense solutions, announced today the launch of version 2.1 of its R&D 100 Award-winning appliance, PacketHound. PacketHounds default configuration settings allow organizations to manage and block over 70 network protocols and file-sharing applications, such as Morpheus, KaZaA, Napster, instant messaging, and streaming media applications. AMES, Ia. (May 2, 2002) Palisade Systems Inc., a leading provider of internal network defense solutions, announced today the launch of version 2.1 of its R&D 100 Award-winning appliance, PacketHound.

PacketHounds default configuration settings allow organizations to manage and block over 70 network protocols and file-sharing applications, such as Morpheus, KaZaA, Napster, instant messaging, and streaming media applications. These applications can cause significant network security, liability, and bandwidth constraint issues for an organization. Using PacketHound an administrator can monitor and control virtually any application or protocol by transmission control protocol (tcp) port or custom programmable signatures.

The launch of version 2.1 of PacketHound includes several new features:

Support for TrendReporter
The TrendReporter module, a real-time network traffic monitoring and visualization module, tracks and displays all network applications and protocols monitored by the PacketHound rule sets in a real-time graphical display. With the reporting module, an organization can monitor bandwidth usage on the network in real time and instantaneously identify applications, protocols, and users consuming large amounts of bandwidth.

Support for SQL Database
Supporting SQL databases make logging and reporting more robust and efficient. The addition of a Block Without Logging" option when creating rules eliminates unnecessary logs, making retrieval and reviewing quicker and easier for the administrator.

Improved Threshold-Based Management by Protocol Functions
Threshold-Based Management by Protocol functions allow an organization to manage a users ability to use bandwidth-consuming applications when network traffic reaches a set level. The capabilities of these functions have been expanded with Version 2.1 to allow the administrator to set threshold rules to block traffic from one specific protocol, group of protocols, or applications on your network when they exceed a certain level.

Award Winning Software
Palisade won the R&D 100 award for its development of PacketHound; this award recognizes products with leapfrog technology, which provide simple, elegant solutions to complex or long-standing technical problems that are clearly superior to existing technology.
