Korean Investors Trade North American Stocks in Real-Time for the First Time using the Midas Global Direct Access Network
Seoul, Korea, April 30, 2002 ˇV MidasTrade.com, Inc. marked today the launch of trading on its Midas Global Direct Access Network to allow Korean Investors to trade U.S. stocks in real time for the first time. The system was launched at a special ceremony at the Convention Center of 63 Building in Yoido, Seoul on April 30 at 10:30 p.m. (9:30 a.m. EST) when NYSE and Nasdaq markets opened. The ceremony was attended by about 300 dignitaries from home and abroad including Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs Frederick W. Maerkle from the U.S. Embassy office in Korea.
MidasTrade is bridging the gap between Korean Investors and the U.S. stock markets by providing the first direct link in Korea to allow Korean investors access to U.S. securities. MidasTrade, working with the Korea Securities Depository (KSD), has designed the global direct access network to provide Korean investors with immediate execution and confirmation of their U.S. securities trades at a low cost. Bank of New York Clearing Services LLC, a subsidiary of the Bank of New York, has entered into an agreement with KSD to provide clearing and custodial services. Leading Investment and Securities, Ltd. will be the first licensed securities firm to participate in the platform.
ˇ§We are helping Korean investors access U.S. equity markets in real time for the first time ever by reducing the costs and time associated with trading U.S. securitiesˇ¨ Brad Eckenweiler, President of MidasTrade said at the ceremony. ˇ§This is a major step in connecting investors and liquidity. Together we are bridging gaps and breaking the boundaries between South Korea and the North American equities markets.ˇ¨
Based on the previously agreed upon and confirmed Memorandum of Understanding, Midas Securities will provide Korean securities brokerage firms with the following execution services:
„h Multiple level quotes with integrated order execution to the Nasdaq Stock Market, the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and Electronic Communications Networks (ECNs)
„h Trade support
„h Global Network connectivity
„h Online trader resources
Mr. Eckenweiler continued, ˇ§We are seeing tremendous enthusiasm for our system from Korean investors, and we expect securities firms participation to increase dramatically as demand for our systems and capabilities continues to grow.ˇ¨
Korean Investment Environment
Korean investors have been shut out of the global market place, primarily due to their own foreign exchange laws. In 1998 though, the Korean government began to implement a liberalization program of foreign exchange that today allows direct trading of U.S. securities. But most Korean investors still do not trade foreign securities because of the complexity, time delays and unpredictable costs associated with the trading system of foreign stocks. The execution of trades between South Korea and the U.S. are slow and ineffective, sometimes taking more than seven days to clear. And there are expensive surcharges and extra commissions added to the cost of each transaction. MidasTrade will be the first company to provide a direct link between Korean investors and the U.S. securities markets and will dramatically reduce both the costs and time associated with trading foreign securities.
Korea is the global leader in online trading. As of February 2002, the total number of online securities accounts in Korea was 4.8 million, which is 54.3 percent of the 8.9 million securities accounts in Korea. More than 50% of all trades in Korea are executed online and the average number of orders per online account in Korea was 13.54 trades per month. In comparison, there are approximately 19 million online accounts in the U.S. with an average of less than one trade per account per month.
Technology
With the Midas Global Direct Access Network, investors will access U.S. securities quotes and data in real-time from their computer, obtained directly from a data center in Seoul, Korea and get will direct execution of U.S. securities transactions through their online trading account.
