The Agoraphobic Entrepreneur

Soon after graduating from Boston University, New Yorker Jenna Glatzer developed a debilitating panic disorder that left her completely housebound. She had to give up her job acting in a children's theatre and find a way to make money from home.

She was soon earning a living as a freelance writer, and designed a small website to promote her work. Before long, aspiring writers began sending her e-mail to ask questions about how they, too, could "make it" as freelance writers.

She wrote up a beginner's guide to freelance writing and posted it on the website. It drew such traffic that she decided to write more articles, and ask other writers to contribute. No longer was the site a vehicle for her own writing; it was quickly becoming a comprehensive website for writers.

Three years later, Absolute Write is home to two weekly newsletters with more than 73,000 subscribers, and has hundreds of pages of content, all designed to help aspiring writers become professional writers. Glatzer's company also offers online writing courses, editorial services, and software for writers.

"When I became housebound, I was just hoping to find a way to survive," says Glatzer. "I never expected to become an entrepreneur in a business that's so fulfilling. Now, authors send me copies of their books with 'thank you' notes for helping them become published authors. It's tremendously gratifying."
