IP Worldwide, the leading intellectual property magazine, has named the law firm of Fish & Richardson P.C. the top patent litigation firm
in the country. In a survey published in May 2002, IP Worldwide found that Fish & Richardson handles more patent litigation than any other firm.
The survey ranks firms by the number of new patent infringement cases brought
and the number of new cases defended in 2001. Fish & Richardson was involved in 70 new cases - the firm filed 30 new patent infringement cases
and entered appearances defending 40 new patent infringement cases.
The survey found Fish & Richardson's lead in patent litigation to be significant; the firm beat the second place finisher by a margin of 30%.
The article calls Fish & Richardson an "IP powerhouse" with "the bench and trial skills to handle bet-the-company cases." "We are pleased to have been acknowledged as the leader in this area for a second straight year," said Peter Devlin, the firm's President. "The
numbers show that we are the go-to firm for patent litigation."
Founded in 1878, Fish & Richardson is one the largest law firms in the U.S. practicing exclusively in the areas of intellectual property, complex litigation, and technology law. The firm has 250 attorneys and technology
specialists in eight offices. Fish & Richardson has long represented great innovators and business entrepreneurs. The firm served pioneering inventors such as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and the Wright brothers.
Fish & Richardson represents clients in all fields of emerging technology,
including biotechnology, bioinformatics, proteomics, optics, the Internet,
and computer hardware and software. In 2001, Fish & Richardson obtained almost 1,400 patents for its clients and filed over 4,000 new patent applications. On the trademark side, Fish & Richardson obtained about 300 registered trademarks for its clients and filed over 600 new trademark applications.
In addition to its intellectual property practice, Fish & Richardson has a
broad complex litigation practice that includes not only patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret litigation, but also a wide range of
high-stakes, high-tech business litigation. The firm's litigation victories have been named to The National Law Journal's biggest winners lists for four straight years.
In March 2001, The National Law Journal chose Fish & Richardson's victory in Bell Communications Research, Inc. v. Marconi
Communications as one of the most significant defense victories of 2000.
The case, which was won on summary judgment, was one of only two summary judgment victories to be selected for the year's best defense verdicts.
