Asha Tyson the only child born to a terminally ill mother, endured unimaginable physical, emotional and sexual abuse throughout her entire youth. Tyson shares, ÂIt wasnÂt uncommon to find myself bound to a bed with rope and beaten.Â
She was labeled a Âproblem child and had no one to turn to for guidance or protection. After being abandoned and virtually forgotten, at 17 Asha ended up homeless, living in almost 20 different places. Asha reveals in interviews, ÂFortunately, I didnÂt have to live in an alley inside a refrigerator box with blankets from the Salvation Army as I had planned. A lady found a homeless shelter for me in the basement of a church instead.Â
Although everyone had given up on her, Asha Tyson didnÂt see failure as an option for her life. Being rejected by peers, authority figures and having poor grades did not steal her hopes and crush her spirit. With no connections, no mentors and only $80.00 in her pocket, this survivor went to college, financed her own education, and obtained both bachelor and master degrees in Political Science and Public Administration all in record time.
When asked by reporters, Tyson said,  I went to a school that I donÂt think invited me. I just showed up with everything I owned. I said to the administrator, ÂI have to level with you. My mother is dying and most recently she has lost her mind and canÂt remember me. If you know where my father is, tell me and we will both know. I have no where to go and no one is looking for me. My grades are bad, and if I took all the right college entrance tests, I am sure that I got all the wrong answers. But, sir, please help me. If you will give me a chance by letting me into your school, I promise that I will do something with my life or I will die trying. That was my college application process, and to this day I still have a hard time believing how bazaar it was that I got a chance to live such a good life! I am so grateful.Â
