Education.com are delighted to announce the winners of The Great Big Science Competition

Education.com are delighted to announce the winners of The Great Big Science Competition.

Launched in September 2001 by Education.com, The Great Big Science Competition was devised to engender an interest in science and technology in school children, to show them that science can be a fascinating subject with many applications in every aspect of life and to encourage them to embrace science as a future career. Fully endorsed by the governments Science Year initiative, the competition worked in harmony with National Curriculum coursework making entering easy and involving minimum extra work for teachers.

The main prizes are sleep-overs for entire classes at science-related venues:

Redland High School in Bristol took the 11-14 age group, winning a trip to the Glasgow Science Centre. How acid affects buildings, was explored by looking at local buildings of various ages and then testing different building material in the laboratory.

The Edgeware School, Middlesex won the 14-16 age group and spend a weekend at Centre For Alternative Technology in Wales. Edgeware also chose surface area on air resistance topic, and used parachutes dropped from a scaffolding tower to explore their theories.

In addition, Cybikos, cutting-edge hand-held wireless computers designed specifically for children, will be awarded to those children in the winning classes who, in their teachers opinion, have made the biggest contribution to the project, whether it be for effort, commitment, teamwork or sheer inspiration.

Siobhan Cronin, UK Operating Manager at Education.com, said We have been delighted to support the governments Science Year Initiative with The Great Big Science Competition. We were overwhelmed by the quality of the entries and hope the winners have a fantastic time at their sleepovers."
