Blues Legends daughter, Zakiya Hooker, Jams with Peter Green

Two generations of blues from opposite sides of the ocean came together on the evening of May 10 in San Francisco when Zakiya Hooker, daughter of the late John Lee Hooker, performed two songs with Peter Green.

(San Francisco) Two generations of blues from opposite sides of the ocean came together on the evening of May 10 in San Francisco when Zakiya Hooker, daughter of the late John Lee Hooker, performed two songs with Peter Green, the celebrated founder of Fleetwood Mac, on tour with his band, The Splinter Group. Growing up in a musical environment where - a visitor to the house could be Memphis Slim, Jimmy Reed or even Bonnie Raitt - Zakiya Hooker has always had the blues in her soul.

In England, a young Peter Green, growing up on the music of John Lee Hooker, Earl Hooker, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and a host of black American bluesmen, started Fleetwood Mac with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. Within 18 months, Peter had attained international fame as a uniquely talented guitarist and songwriter, once being voted Best Guitarist of The Year ahead of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck. As a songwriter, he achieved musical immortality when he wrote Black Magic Woman," and Santanas version made it one of contemporary musics best-known songs.

Peter Green has always maintained a devotion to the music he calls the real blues;" thus it was appropriate that he and his band The Splinter Group contribute a track to the forthcoming Blue Storm Music tribute to John Lee Hooker, From Clarksdale To Heaven-Remembering John Lee Hooker. The track they recorded was John Lees Crawlin King Snake," and it became the vehicle for Zakiya Hooker and Peter Green to finally meet. Joining Peter and his band on stage at Bimbos in San Francisco, Zakiya performed an emotional version of Crawlin King Snake" and a spirited reading of Jimmy Reeds Big Boss Man."

After the performance, Carlos Santana, who joined Peter on stage the same
evening for a 12-minute jam on "Black Magic Woman", was speaking with Zakiya
and commented, "Looking at you on stage, I felt the presence of your father,
and speaking with you now, I feel him even more." And Carlos should
know - Carlos was a dear friend of John Lee Hooker and played on all of John
Lee's albums in the '90s, including "Chill Out," which Carlos both produced
and played guitar.

Zakiya Hooker will be contributing her version of her fathers I Wanna Hug You" to From Clarksdale To Heaven-Remembering John Lee Hooker, as well as penning the liner notes.

From Clarksdale To Heaven-Remembering John Lee Hooker will be released in North America (Blue Storm Music) and Europe (Eagle Records) this coming summer.
