Second April, a non-profit art gallery opens in Canton, Ohio. Helping to raise money for charity and support the local art community
Canton, OH -- June 6, 2002 -- Second April, a non-profit art gallery founded by Todd Walburn and Brennis Booth, will open on June 9th, 2002 in Canton, OH. The gallery was founded with the intent of raising money by selling art and donating a portion of the proceeds to the charity of the artists choice. We got the idea from various charitable organizations who raise money through the sale or auction of artworks," says Todd. But this is usually a once a year thing or it is totally inaccessible to the general public. We wanted to do the same thing but on a bigger, more down to earth scale -- something in which anyone could participate."
The artwork in the gallery was created mostly by artists local to the area, including Brennis Booth and his son Brennis Booth Jr., a co-founder of the gallery. We want to be open to all kinds of artwork -- painting, sculpture, pottery, even hand-made quilts," says Brennis Jr. You may not like everything you see but we hope that everyone will find something that they can take home with them." The gallery hopes to attract new artists who might not be ready for a show at a mainstream gallery but who produce high-quality works that they wish to share with the community.
One-third of the retail price of each work that sells will be donated to the charity of the artists choice. A listing and description of each charity is provided with the work. The remaining two-thirds is divided evenly between the artist and the gallery for operating expenses. At the end of the year, any money received in excess of operating expenses will be divided evenly amongst the charities supported throughout the year.
The gallery is located at 2529 Cleveland Ave. NW in Canton, Ohio on the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Woodward Place about a block North of 25th Street, across from the Canton Christian Home. The entrance to the gallery is on the side of the building facing Woodward Place. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday 10:00am -- 6:00pm and by appointment. The gallery will be closed on Sundays. An online gallery is available at http://www.secondapril.org.
