RICK BARRY ANNOUNCES HOOPS FANTASY CAMP OCT. 25-27; NBA STARS NATE THURMOND, AL ATTLES, TOM TOLBERT & JIM BARNETT JOIN BARRY FOR THREE-DAY CAMP IN SONOMA COUNTY
NBA Hall of Famer and sports radio host Rick Barry announced today that he is staging an all-new basketball fantasy camp this fall
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - June 6, 2002 -NBA Hall of Famer and sports radio host Rick Barry announced today that he is staging an all-new basketball fantasy camp this fall for enthusiasts who want to experience pro-style hoops play and learn from the games greats.
Barry, a star with the 1975 NBA Champion Golden State Warriors and now host of a daily sports talk show on radio station KNBR in San Francisco, has put together a team of camp coaches that includes Hall of Famer Nate Thurmond, former Warriors coach Al Attles, and former NBA players-turned announcers Tom Tolbert and Jim Barnett.
The three-day Rick Barry Basketball Fantasy Camp will be conducted at the University of Sports Indoor Sports Complex in Rohnert Park, California, in the Sonoma County wine country, on the weekend of October 25-27, 2002.
For the first time, adult campers may bring their sons or daughters aged 12-18 who are interested in learning the game and hanging out with Mom or Dad as well as the pros. Instruction for the youngsters will be headed by Dave Bollwinkel, former head coach at St. Marys College and now a scout for the Boston Celtics.
Next to playing basketball, I love teaching it," Barry said. When some of the guys I met at other fantasy camps years ago recently urged me to put on my own camp, I couldnt say no. Everyones going to have a great time. Being surrounded by my old coach and teammates will be a lot of fun, too. And I disqualify myself from the underhanded free throw contest."
One of the games Top 50" players of all time, Barry played 14 years in the ABA and NBA with the Warriors, Oakland Oaks, Washington Capitals and New York Nets. Known for his aggressive play and trademark underhanded free throw style, he scored 25,279 career points and won multiple all-star and MVP honors.
Nate Thurmond, a fellow member of the Top 50" club who compiled a distinguished career with the Warriors, Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers, was a seven-time NBA All-Star and holds the league record for rebounds in a quarter with 18 in 1965. He was the first NBA player to record a quadruple double double in 1974. Today Thurmond owns Big Nates BBQ restaurant in San Francisco and is active in community affairs.
Attles coached the 1975 champion Warriors and has been a front office executive with the team since 1987. Tolbert, a seven-year NBA player with the Charlotte Hornets, Golden State, the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Clippers, is now a studio analyst for NBC-TV and co-hosts a sports talk show on KNBR radio in San Francisco. Barnett, who played for 11 years in the NBA with the Boston Celtics, the Warriors and six other teams, has been the color commentator on Warriors broadcasts for 17 years.
Cost for the entire camp will be $2,495, which includes accommodations at the luxurious Doubletree Hotel in Rohnert Park, all meals, all instruction and play, a highlights video, basketball gear and awards.
