A Steinway baby grand, first given to Alice in the 1930s on her 16th birthday by her European-Jewish immigrant parents, becomes a cause of tension as well as a source of healing in this novel that takes the reader through the emergence of rhythm & blues and rock 'n roll in the 50's and 60s, through the protest movements of the 60s and 70s, to the present day.                
Alice's daughter, Beth, rebels against her mother's preference for Romantic classical music and the piano, developing instead an affection for r&b, rock, and the harpsichord. Music helps Beth's daughter, Alexis, overcome learning disabilities in a way that is healing for both herself and her mother. Their distinct voices paint an unforgettable picture of the role of music in family life and how different women approach love, career, friendship-and each other.

Judith Laura's poetry, fiction, and articles have been published in a variety of journals and anthologies. She has been a news reporter and a magazine editor. This is her third book and first novel. Her first book, She Lives!, included original songs by Laura. The author lives near Washington, DC.
