OTRA Introduces A3Control Server,
a Java-Based Solution for Controlling the Distribution
of Secured PDF Files over the Internet
OTRA introduces A3Control Server which works with FileOpen WebPublisher2 to manage permissions for access, printing and forwarding of PDF documents over the Internet. More than the limited document privacy and security provided by simple encrypted delivery, this solution continues to manage access to PDF documents after delivery, providing audit and positive control over use and distribution.
FAIR HAVEN, NJ, July 1, 2002: OTRA (www.otra.com), a provider of electronic document distribution systems and solutions, today announced the release of its A3Control server, a system for managing document access permissions over the Internet. The server interoperates with WebPublisher2 technology from FileOpen Systems (www.fileopen.com) to provide a broad spectrum of document privacy and security solutions. The combination, being marketed as FileOpen Permission Server, allows document publishers to manage access to documents even after delivery, controlling the viewing, printing and, perhaps most importantly, whether documents can be electronically forwarded to others.
WebPublisher2 protects PDF documents by applying encryption, and managing the decryption and viewing of a document through Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader with a plug-in. Permission to access the document is controlled by reference to a network application, communicating with the plug-in over a secure channel. A3Control server provides this server function.
The A3 Control server is implemented in Java, and supports both JSP and servlet-based extensions, allowing its customization for particular applications. Several standard applications are provided, however, making A3Control server with WebPublisher2 a complete, ready to run solution for a wide range of users. The implementation supports most popular application servers and databases and runs on most popular server platforms including Windows NT/2000/XP, Solaris and Linux.
FileOpen Permission Server provides solutions for companies seeking to assure the privacy and security of documents, limiting access to only authorized parties, and allowing audit and control over documents, even after delivery. Users can receive private PDF documents as e-mail attachments or download them from web sites. The permission server will authenticate the user (by ID/password, machine ID, etc.) and will regulate when, whether, and how many times a document can be opened, printed, or whether the document can be saved or forwarded. Controls can be set as finely as per-recipient, for any document.
Potential users of the product include publishers of high-value content newsletters, financial analysts and researchers. Users requiring privacy and confidentiality of information, such as human resource departments, healthcare providers and legal and accounting firms involved in due diligence and audit activities also can make use of the facilities provided. Many businesses are hesitant to allow valuable or sensitive information to be sent as e-mail or posted on the web because of the risk," said Jeffrey Goldfarb, president of OTRA. WebPublisher2 with OTRAs A3Control Server solves this problem. The technology is easily integrated with a companys existing systems and procedures, and we believe this solution will be welcomed by any company looking for a comprehensive, secure and customizable solution for document security and control on the Internet."
