The Pool" is a story of romance gone sour-not from love, but from cultural expectations. Disappointed love is also a theme in Red" and Honolulu," each in their own distinct way. These stories, in fact, hearken somewhat to the work of Pacific writer Louis Becke whom Maugham had met and certainly had read.
