Decline in PSAs and Free Print Ad Space Hurts Nonprofits

Tough economic times for media outlets translates to less opportunity for event publicity

SAN DIEGO, CA -- July 9, 2002 -- In a recent informal web poll that asked nonprofits if the decline in broadcast Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and donated print ad space has affected event outreach, nearly half (48%) of those surveyed reported yes, that their event outreach was affected by the decrease in free ad space; 52% said they were unaffected. The poll was conducted the last week of June 2002 by Kintera Inc., a leading provider of online solutions to nonprofits including the American Heart Association, Easter Seals and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, among others.

During difficult economic times, print and broadcast media ad revenues usually decrease," says Dr. Harry Gruber, Kinteras CEO and founder. That leaves fewer print pages and less broadcast and cable air time dedicated to nonprofit messages, making it harder than ever for organizations to spread the word about their cause. Couple that with an already tough fundraising climate, and nonprofits find that reaching existing and potential donors through these traditional channels is no longer easy, or free."

However, Gruber notes, many of Kinteras nonprofit clients are generating even more awareness -- and donations -- than they had in previous years. Knowledgeable nonprofits are turning to the Internet to make up for event exposure they are no longer getting on TV and in magazines and newspapers. The rate of success in getting their message across is very high, especially when you consider that email combined with personalization and grassroots marketing techniques on the Internet allow organizations to be even more targeted with their marketing efforts at a very low cost."
