biolitec Signs Distribution Agreement Worth $35 -- 68 Million
EAST LONGMEADOW, MA; June 12, 2002 -- biolitec Inc. (Frankfurt Exchange: BIB), manufacturer of the Ceralas diode laser, and AngioDynamics (AMEX: EZM.A and EZM.B), a wholly-owned subsidiary of E-Z-EM, Inc., have entered into an exclusive distribution agreement for the interventional radiology and vascular surgery market segments. Over the next five years, biolitec is to provide AngioDynamics with a number of Ceralas diode lasers, at an estimated value of $35 -- 68 million.
biolitec, in partnership with AngioDynamics, has unveiled its new, minimally-invasive treatment for venous reflux of the greater saphenous vein -- which may lead to varicose veins -- the ELVeS (Endo Laser Vein System; pronounced Elvis") treatment.
biolitecs CEO, Dr. Wolfgang Neuberger, commented on the joint venture by saying, The ELVeS treatment combines the strength of two healthcare innovators, bringing together AngioDynamics experience in designing and marketing minimally invasive procedures with biolitecs knowledge of laser-based vascular procedures. The announcement of the ELVeS system is a breakthrough step in improving the treatment of venous diseases."
More than half of Americans over the age of 65 suffer from venous disease, the most common form being varicose veins. biolitecs minimally invasive, in-office procedure will offer an effective alternative to the treatments predecessor, the surgical stripping of veins -- a major surgery that requires general anesthesia and hospitalization. In contrast, the ELVeS treatment tremendously benefits patients because it only lasts 45 minutes, leaves no scars, and minimizes recovery time.
The ELVeS procedure is less expensive than surgical alternatives. It takes less than an hour to complete, can be performed in a physicians office -- and when finished, patients walk away, returning to daily life as usual," said Kelly B. Moran, biolitecs Chief Operating Officer. ELVeS is a life-changing procedure. For many it will restore their ability to walk and perform routine physical activities without pain or discomfort. Others will regain pride in their legs appearance and feel free to wear shorts or go to the beach again."
During the ELVeS treatment, doctors first locate the greater saphenous vein with ultrasound and administer local anesthesia to the treatment site. Next, a thin, flexible fiber from biolitecs Ceralas D laser is threaded into the saphenous vein to seal it and eliminate the cause of the varicose veins. For one week following the procedure, the patient is to wear compression stockings during the daytime.
