dharmakayamusic Building the Madison Indie Music Scene

dharmakayamusic (dkm) is a NEW music label, booking and promotions company based in Madison, WI . The company specializes in the genres of Indie Rock, Experimental, Emo, etc.

When most people think "Madison, WI and Music " bands like Garbage and Rainer Maria (for the indie-savvy) usually come to mind. But ask Madison music aficionados what name they associate with new underground music, and chances are most would say dharmakayamusic (dkm).

Within the last month, growing independent bands like +/-, Rainer Maria, Track Star, The Kills, Presidio and Dead and Gone have been booked by dkm to full house crowds.

The dkm company operates on a mainly independent level, but working in the past with My Pal God Records (who gave MTV a few tracks from some of their bands to be on "The Real World Chicago"), highlighted the pros and cons of the general mainstream:

I can't really speak for any other independent labels, but within my own operations you can keep yourself at an Indie level while operating slightly on a mainstream level through media activity." said Krist Krueger, President and Founder. ...I wouldn't say that there is an underlying ploy to escape the mainstream...Im neither a fan nor an enemy of the mainstream. I don't personally want to be a part of it, as it seems that the more you grow, so do the regulations."

In addition to booking bands to play locally, dharmakayamusic has three bands signed to its label: Southerly, The Cool People, and their recent addition, Electric Automatic. All three have tours booked locally and outside the Madison area by dkm. All promotions for incoming bands are maintained by dkm, as well as promotions for the bands signed to the label.
