Felix Kulpa Gallery Unveils Strange Sculpture Show
If the great artists of the Renaissance had been able to combine their talent for invention with their passion for the Arts, they might have made a Prayer Machine, a device for amplifying ones prayers, complete with leaded glass, flying buttresses, and spitting fire. That is exactly what Santa Cruz artist Wes Modes has done with his interactive, whimsical sculptures Prayer Machines I, II, and III. You are invited to twiddle, tweak, push, pull, and interact with a collection of recent work featured in an all-new exhibition at Santa Cruzs newest art gallery the Felix Kulpa Gallery and Sculpture Garden.
My work asks you to participate in some way," said Modes. It walks a meandering line between the antique and the mad scientist." Modes has been involved with Burning Man for nine years and manages a theme camp, the Costco Soulmate Trading Outlet. He recently made national headlines as the organizer of the Santa Cruz Million Clown March.
Recent works by Modes, as well as the light sculptures of Lea Pianna, neon pieces by Catarina Hosler, and David Friedheims Monster Barbeque" will be featured in the Felix Kulpa Galleys new show. Other sculptors include Willie K. Bullion, Aaron Van de Kerckhove, Matt Winum, and Shaune Friedman.
At a time when Santa Cruz art galleries are on the endangered species list, the Felix Kulpa Gallery believes the key to success is accessibility and humor. This is evidenced by their upcoming show ARS FELIX EXTERNUS," or literally in Latin, the artful display of the strange." The exhibit runs from July 19th 2002 through September 30th. The Felix Kulpa Gallery unveils its delectable, new sculpture garden at the opening reception July 19th from 5-9PM.
The Felix Kulpa Gallery and Sculpture Garden can be found in the heart of downtown Santa Cruz at 107 Elm Street (next to Streetlight Records). Gallery hours are 11AM-7PM, Wednesday through Sunday.
