Robotics, a Family Affair
Freshman Aaron Miller joined Beach Cities Robotics Team 294 in 2001 as a programmer. Little did his family know that it would become a family affair.
Aarons father, Mark Miller joined the robotics team in 2002 to become a mentor regarding computer issues, and ended up working with the students on the actual building of the robot, "I get to have as much fun as the students," Mark exclaimed.
Aarons stepsister, Angela Barron, joined robotics in 2002 as a junior. "We had no clue just how much my daughter Angela Barron would thrive in the program. She worked at the machine shop on the robot, co-drove at all the competitions, and is now RUHS President of Robotics. Her sister-in-law is amazed because she never imagined Angela doing something like this," says mom Cheryl Miller.
Angelas sister, Marygrace Barron, wants in on the action. It is way more than I thought it would be. At the meeting they talked about all this different kind of training that they would like to have and I want to participate in all of it," said an excited Marygrace, an incoming 9th grader. Marygrace is taking welding classes at El Camino College over the summer with her stepdad, Mark Miller. Shes the youngest student to have taken a welding class at the college. Marks ten year old daughter, Katie Rose Winslow, says, I want to do that!"
All of that got mom into the program. Cheryl Miller is now doing public relations for the group, and making sure that food is at all the meetings because she has more than her own hungry kids meeting three times a week working through meals.
They are experimenting with robotic subsystems over the summer, and will continue thru next school year until the next competition.
