Columnist Criticizes Fox News' Bill O'Reilly for comparing Koran to "Mein Kampf"

Commentator Andy Martin says Bill O'Reilly is a "National Ignoramus" for attacking the Koran

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NEWS CONFERENCE BY INTERNET COLUMNIST AWARDS FOX NEWS' BILL O'REILLY "NATIONAL IGNORAMUS" AWARD OVER KORAN DISPUTE

(NEW YORK) Columnist/Internet/radio Broadcaster Andy Martin will present a special Internet/radio news conference Monday, July 15th at 1:00 P.M. to award Fox News' Bill O'Reilly a "National Ignoramus" award because of O'Reilly's comparison of the Koran to "Mein Kampf."

  • am distressed that Bill O'Reilly has impugned the integrity of the Koran," says Martin. "His recent program (July 10th) comparing the Koran to Hitler's Mein Kampf shows deep, deep ignorance. I am pleased to present Bill with a 'National Ignoramus' award for his ridiculous display of intellectually challenged commentary. Maybe O'Reilly should make himself his 'Most ridiculous item of the day.' H.L. Mencken said 'No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people,' or words to that effect, but I sure hope
that Bill's display of utter stupidity does not reflect the mental attitudes of his audience.

  • have no problem with O'Reilly being confrontational and critical. It is what we do in the media. But insulting intellectual inquiry and showing a 'know nothing' attitude is scary. You can disagree with someone without showing yourself as a yahoo.

"All religious texts have controversial passages. But inquiry is what young minds should be exposed to. What was O'Reilly reading in college? Mad magazine? O'Reilly discredits the media and Americans generally when he displays utter ignorance of the need to expose young minds to controversy and inquiry.

  • hope Bill will recant his goofy remarks and reflect on the fact that while he is free to attack, and he is free to challenge, abuse of the freedom and exhibition of sheer stupidity and ignorance will sooner or later make him a national laughingstock. If more people had read 'Mein Kampf,' and paid attention maybe six million Jews would not have perished, as well as countless tens of millions of other innocent victims.

"There are hundreds of millions, indeed billions, of followers of the Koran. Most of them are peace loving people. A handful of extremists have sought to portray Islam as a license to kill. Young people need to read texts to realize that whether one distorts the Christian religion or the Jewish religion or the Islamic religion, or any religion, as a pretext for mayhem and hatred, it is wrong. I hope Mr. O'Reilly will pause on receipt of his award as 'National Ignoramus' to reflect and repent. President Bush had it right: 'Islam is not the enemy.'

"Maybe O'Reilly should even read some Catholic texts.

  • may only have a fraction of O'Reilly's audience, but I suspect he may have only a fraction of my intelligence," says Martin.
