A Search For Place

Fine art photographer Christy Karpinski has focused her work on a search for identity and place; where the inside of a person touches the outside world. Hers is a search for meaning in the world and in our individual selves - meaning found and meaning attributed. This search is sometimes through an examination of the bodies we walk around in and how we present ourselves, and sometimes through strange discarded objects that once carried meaning and use. It is a search for what defines us and what keeps us rooted in life.

Much of Christy's work over the last ten years has focused on a documentary style approach to making portraits of children. Her clients have been new families and her method has been spending significant amounts of time with the child, getting to know her or him while photographing. In this context of family, she worked to capture the emerging identity of these children at a moment in their lives when who they are and where they belong are fairly clear, for the time being.
