Seaweed Systems Becomes First Khronos Group Contributor for OpenGL® ES Standard
Seaweeds expertise in DO-178B certifiable, small-footprint embedded graphics API subsets will assist in making OpenGL® ES ready for safety-critical applications.
SIGGRAPH, San Antonio, Texas -- July 23, 2002 -- Seaweed Systems, Inc. (www.seaweed.com) a leading developer and supplier of OpenGL® and X Window System embedded graphics driver products, is pleased to announce today that they have become the first Contributing Member to join the Khronos Group under their new Participation Agreement. Seaweed Systems is also honored to provide a display on the Khronos Groups (www.khronos.org) booth #5060 at SIGGRAPH in San Antonio, Texas, July 23-25, 2002 that features an embedded 3D automatic terrain rendering that demonstrates how a future real-world avionics application might benefit from the type of 3D embedded graphics API being developed by the Khronos Group Members. The demonstration uses Seaweeds own 3D OpenGL® subset API that is an integral part of the package that has been developed by EmbVUE (www.embvue.com), a Strategic Marketing Partner of Seaweed Systems. A fully embedded version of the same demonstration, which has generated a great deal of interest in the avionics community because it contains a full stack of COTS software running a rich and realistic graphics environment on deployable COTS hardware at the speeds the avionics community demands, is also being shown this week at the Farnborough Air Show in the UK, July 22-28, 2002.
Seaweed Systems is excited to join the Group as a Contributing Member and help to establish small-footprint 2D and 3D embedded graphics APIs using standardized subsets of OpenGL®," said Robert Schulman, President of Seaweed Systems, Inc. For quite some time we have been successfully developing OpenGL® subsets to meet the needs of our customers in the avionics and high-end embedded graphics markets with requirements for safety-critical solutions. For our avionics customers, certification by the FAA or other Regulatory Body to DO-178B standards has become the key factor driving their development. Seaweed has developed a range of DO-178B-certifiable products that enable its customers to benefit from their small-footprint, fully-supported, COTS OpenGL® solutions, and we are we are delighted with this opportunity to contribute our experience to the development efforts of the Khronos Group."
Seaweeds real-world experience, both in certified, safety-critical embedded graphics APIs and high-performance OpenGL drivers, will make them a valuable contributor to Khronos OpenGL ES initiative," said Neil Trevett, secretary of the Khronos Group. The success of any standardization project ultimately rests on the commitment and expertise of its participants -- and I think we are off to an excellent start by welcoming Seaweed as the first Contributor under the Khronos new Participation framework."
