Homeland Security? Or Lightning Strikes Twice?
July 24 2002, ORLANDO FLORIDA - Eerily familiar, thought author Curie Nova, whose third novel, Lightning Strikes Twice has just been released. Written nearly a year ago, slated for national release around mid-August, she knew that the national mood was not right for release of Lightning Strikes Twice. But the book may prove prophetic: it features terrorist acts, like those which recently triggered acquiescence to removal of civil liberties. In Curies book, someone else is calling the shots but a figurehead leader puts frightening changes in motion:
• Lightning Strikes Twice: Certain forces decide that an international group to protect their interests must be formed, so they create a special group called The Original Brotherhood." Nova originally called the group The Homeland Brotherhood" but changed the name after the President announced the new Homeland Security group. June 2002 News Announcement: President Bush spearheads a new organization, under the name Homeland Security."
• Lightning Strikes Twice: The Original Brotherhood" sounds like Gestapo and Secret Police tactics used in Germany during the Third Reich. They decide their security" is at stake. July 2002 News Announcement: Just four weeks from now, the Homeland Security office plans to mobilize Operation TIPS" whereby your cable guy, UPS delivery man, and the guy that reads your gas meter will be called upon to look for suspicious" things and report them to the Homeland Security office.
• Lightning Strikes Twice: Original Brotherhood garb: black jackboots and parachute pants. June 2002 News: Homeland Security director Tom Ridge suggested new uniforms for his crack security squad: parachute pants and black boots.
• Lightning Strikes Twice: Novas Original Brotherhood" creates the most sophisticated surveillance system ever. July 2002 News: The proposed new Office of Homeland Security" promises that it will have the most sophisticated surveillance system ever.
• Lightning Strikes Twice: The plot involves a resurgence of Hitler, through new personnel and organizational structures. June 2002 News: One division of Homeland Security will be called the State Security Division (SSD). This is the same acronym used by the Brotherhood for the former East German secret police. The word Homeland" is explained in Lightning Strikes Twice. In German, Homeland" is a neuter word, Vaterland, or Fatherland. It was used by Hitler to refer to protecting his turf.
Weird coincidence of the day: Curie Nova, from Florida, sent Governor Jeb Bush a copy of her first book, In the Sight of the Lord, brutally critical of Floridas racially repressive environment. He sent her a thank-you, but offered no insight into the mainly segregated environment that exists in Central Florida.
