Ultrak Rugged UltraDomeTM Cameras have become known as The Eye That Never Blinks" in the City of London, Ontario, Canada where two violent murders sparked the need for better safety measures. A committee of elected public officials, members of the city police department, and chairman of a citizens committee initiated the London Downtown CCTV Project."
                                                        
The London Downtown CCTV Project, put into effect at the end of 2001 to deter future crime, was designed and installed by Mirtech International Security, one of Canadas largest installing dealers of Ultrak equipment. The Downtown Project is currently comprised of 16 Ultrak color cameras equipped with pan, tilt and zoom capabilities, installed at major intersections in the downtown core of the city. The cameras are controlled with Ultraks mini-Max 1000 Matrix control system. Cameras are monitored 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, and can be viewed from either city Hall or from police headquarters.

The main functions of the cameras are to improve community safety, expand crime prevention and the increase the desirability of the city as a place for shopping, business and leisure.

How the system works:
Ultraks Rugged UltraDomeTM Cameras are suspended from traffic light poles on steel arms that also hold omni-directional antenna transmitters. These transmitters send the video and control signal to a receiver atop a centrally-located, high-rise office tower from which the signals are retransmitted to city hall.

At the camera location, the video signal is converted into a digital signal so that it can be transmitted over a wireless network. To provide visual evidence (if required), all cameras are digitally recorded using Ultraks Eurocorder II.

The system, equipped with sixteen 21" monitors and two 14" monitors, provides efficient monitoring by staff members. Preprogrammed tours are arranged to view desired areas of the streets. When an incident occurs or suspicious activity is noticed, the operator will assume manual control and track the occurrence. If intervention is required, police headquarters is alerted to view the camera and dispatch officers if necessary.

Norm Rushton, Installation Manager for Mirtech International Security who installed the system, stated, This system is unique in the fact that all controls and video images are transmitted to the control station via wireless links. This was necessary due to the lack of fiber optic or copper wire available at the 16 camera locations. Over all, this system leaves the City of London with a greater feeling of security and the police with an instant picture of incidents such as fights, demonstrations, vandalism, robberies, etc."

The Rugged Ultra Dome:

The Rugged UltraDomeTM KD6 was chosen because it is specifically designed for installation in both indoor and outdoor applications. The dome is dust tight, weatherproof, and able to withstand mechanical impact making it an excellent outdoor, vandal resistant camera. The lower dome is attached with a key-lock to resist tampering. The dome features a rugged integral aluminum swivel" mounting bracket that can accommodate either wall or pendant mounting making for ease of installation.
