When the Mercury Continues to Rise...
Hingham Municipal Light Offers Summer Energy Tips
DATELINE: HINGHAM, MA, AUGUST 6, 2002... When the temperature climbs, the demand for energy soars. Hingham Municipal Light Plant (HMLP) recently announced important energy conservation tips that can help avoid brownouts and escalating energy costs.
When the mercury rises:
· Use major appliances early in the morning and late on very hot days. The best times vary, but generally before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m. whenever possible.
· Spare your electric range and oven by cooking meals in a toaster oven, slow cooker or other energy-saving appliance. If you must use your oven, cook several dishes at once and turn it off immediately when done.
· Dry laundry on an indoor or outdoor clothesline instead of in the dryer.
· Use house and window fans and dehumidifier to keep cool and comfortable on warm days without air conditioners.
· When using your air conditioning during a heat wave, set the thermostat no lower than 78 degrees.
When the temperature rises, the continuous use of air conditioners among other large appliances, causes the demand for energy to peak which ultimately raises the cost of the energy," noted Chris Cox, General Manager of Hingham Municipal Light Plant. If everyone strives to conserve, we wont risk an energy crisis or an increase in cost."
