Tokyo, Japan, August 8, 2002 -- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today released the Environmental Report 2002 on its web page (http://www.oki.com/en/eco/2002/top.html), which shows the environment protective activities implemented by Oki Electric and its group companies in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2002. It covers major activity results, including obtainment of ISO14001 certification and achievement of zero emissions, which brought Oki group an approximate one 1 billion yen reduction in its environmental protection costs compared with those of the previous fiscal year.
"This is the forth time that Oki discloses this kind of information. The report proves the efforts and achievements toward the environment-friendly businesses that Oki has implemented as a core component of its corporate management policies," said Masayoshi Ino, Executive Vice President at Oki Electric, responsible for all of the Oki groups environmental protection strategies.
The company set Oki Eco Plan 21 in September 1999, as an environment protective activity plan, giving high priority to such activities in its corporate management strategies throughout all of its group companies. The last fiscal year, in particular, Oki focused on obtaining ISO14001 certification through establishment of environment management system in all of its group companies. And Oki has achieved its goal to obtain the certification in all six of its production and R&D facilities at Oki Electric and in all 16 facilities of the Oki group companies in Japan.
Other major initiatives implemented by the Oki group during the last fiscal year and the results thereof are given below:
1. Four major manufacturing sites of Oki group have achieved zero emissions for general and industrial waste. Within the Oki group, zero emissions are defined as a recycling rate of more than 99% for general and industrial waste.
2. Issued Site Environmental Reports, which describe in detail environmental activities in six major facilities of Oki Electric, in order to enhance information disclosure.
3. Introduced Oki Eco Products Qualification System, for offering products safe for the environment, so far 15 products have qualified.
Through these activities, Oki group has succeeded in reducing about one billion yen of environmental costs in the last fiscal year in total, compared to the previous year, by eliminating 6.6 million yen of manufacturing-waste processing cost and having a 110 million yen profit from the sales of iron scraps, wasted sulfuric acid, wasted wafers, and so forth.
In this fiscal year, Oki has further accelerated its environment protection activities by setting three key activity points, which are: 1) to enhance recycling of used products manufactured by Oki group, 2) to expand environment-friendly procurement by updating the list of environmental affective chemicals compliant with the format of the industry standard conference, and 3) to establish the Environment e-Learning System for providing time and location free education for all its employees.
"Oki keeps its commitment to the environment protective activities as a key management polices, by further accelerating recycling, green-procurement, and educations to employees, along with the strategic reorganization of manufacturing facilities," said Ino.
