biolitec (TM) Receives FDA Clearance for ELVeS (TM) Vein Treatment with Ceralas (R) D 980 nm Laser

biolitec has recently received FDA clearance for the Ceralas D 980 nm Laser's use in the ELVeS treatment for superficial reflux of the greater saphenous vein - which may lead to varicose veins. The Ceralas D is the first 980 nm laser FDA-cleared for the treatment.

biolitec Receives FDA Clearance for ELVeS Vein Treatment with Ceralas D 980 nm Diode Laser

EAST LONGMEADOW, MA; 23 AUGUST 02: biolitec, Inc. announced today that it has received FDA clearance for the Ceralas D 980 nm Diode Lasers use in the revolutionary new ELVeS treatment (Endo Laser Vein System; pronounced Elvis"). biolitecs Ceralas D is the first FDA-cleared 980 nm laser for use in the minimally-invasive ELVeS treatment for superficial reflux of the greater saphenous vein -- which may lead to varicose veins.

biolitecs ELVeS treatment tremendously benefits patients because it is performed in only 45 minutes, leaves no scars, and minimizes recovery time. The ELVeS procedure is less expensive than surgical alternatives. It takes less than an hour to complete, can be performed in a physicians office -- and when finished, patients walk away, returning to daily life as usual," said Kelly B. Moran, biolitecs Chief Operating Officer.

Photobiological research has identified 980 nm as the optimal wavelength for absorption in both hemoglobin and water, which results in unparalleled results for vascular procedures such as the ELVeS treatment. Because the Ceralas D 980 nm laser exhibits superior control and minimizes collateral tissue damage, it is one of the most valuable and versatile lasers available today. Although the 810 nm diode laser is one of the first lasers to be used for endovenous treatment, I believe it is not the best wavelength -- it neither absorbs well in water nor hemoglobin," said John Mauriello, MD, a phlebologist in private group practice with offices in Charlotte and Durham, North Carolina. But my research convinces me that 980 nm is the perfect wavelength because it is right on the peak of the water absorption curve."

In addition, Lowell Kabnick, MD, vascular surgeon and Director of the Vein Institute of New Jersey said, early results with ELVeS produced a 98-plus percent efficacy rate with all patients reporting a high rate of satisfaction."

The ELVeS treatment is relatively simple to perform: First, the greater saphenous vein is located with ultrasound and local anesthesia is administered to the treatment site. Next, a thin, flexible fiber from biolitecs Ceralas D 980 nm laser is introduced into the saphenous vein. Laser light is then emitted, sealing the vein and eliminating the cause of the varicosities.
