Snom: STUN makes deploying SIP devices easy and economical
Berlin, August 23, 2002
After a worldwide trial run, snom technology AG is now publicly announcing the availability of STUN in all of snom's SIP VoIP Phones.
STUN Simple Traversal of UDP Through NATs" is a new technology that makes it possible to deploy SIP devices over most inexpensive NAT routers. STUN enables the deployment of SIP devices using existing Internet Access Devices without explicit SIP support.
Nicolas-Peter Pohland, managing director and co-founder of snom technology AG. says After bringing out the mass deployment functionality and an affordable SIP registrar/proxy, STUN was the next logical step to make deployment of SIP technology easy and affordable. It is great to see a vision turning into reality."
STUN makes the deployment of SIP terminals economical and very attractive for operators or enterprises that already have branch offices or SOHOs connected via Internet (DSL, Cable, T1). The investment costs are lowered considerably since the existing IAD does not have to be replaced.
These users normally are connected to the Internet or VPN via an IAD (Internet Access Device) that maps a global IP address assigned to it to several IP devices on the LAN side. This is called NAT and while it reduces the usage of global IP addresses and increases security by hiding" the internal devices, it also poses a problem for SIP devices that need to be globally visible to function correctly.
STUN Clients address the problem by sending test packets to a STUN server that returns the clients identity on the public Internet. Clients then can change their public identity and participate as a normal SIP device on the Internet. Through periodic refreshing STUN clients keep their network ports open.
Together with snoms „Plug&Play mechanism developed for ITSPs and carriers, mass deployment is possible without having to manually intervene in the installation process.
For installations, that are using a NAT firewall based on SIP, snom offers an Application Layer Gateway (ALG). This software makes the NAT firewall SIP aware and it is then possible to integrate SIP clients that do not do STUN such as the Microsoft Messenger. The ALG and a SNOM STUN server are available for Linux computers.
